Film Ends reduces the photographic process to its most basic and spontaneous element. The series came about as a serendipitous discovery while Adam Wiseman was developing his book Elvis Was Never in Acapulco. In the course of reviewing and collecting material from his photographic archive, Wiseman scanned strips of negatives whose unexposed ends or tips had gone through the same chemical process as the rest of the film. Thus the careful subjective practice of taking a photograph is subverted by the uncontrolled randomness of the film ends. Seen from a distance they resemble carefully constructed abstract expressionist paintings, while up close they reveal the textures and scars of time: scratches, stains, hair and dust. Because of its visual richness, Film Ends became an essential part of the publication, bringing an atmosphere of a nostalgic vacation destination, Technicolor and the celluloid qualities of yesteryear.
